Mount Cameroon Race: Lady Dies From Explosion Wounds
At least one victim of the Buea explosions, which occurred during the 2023 edition of the Mount Cameroon race of hope is dead.
Family sources in Buea have confirmed that Linda Nji died at the Buea regional hospital early Tuesday February 28, 2023.
The victim was injured together with her three children in one amongst the three explosions that occurred few minutes into the race on Saturday.
"They stood outside watching the race at Bunduma where an explosive went off and injured all of them," a source said.
They were later on rushed to the Buea regional hospital, where they have been receiving treatment until Tuesday morning at about 4am when the later died.
Report say she died in the presence of her husband and her remains were conveyed to the hospital mortuary, pending burial.
On Saturday February 25, 2023, three explosives were detonated during the Mount Cameroon race which brought together about 600 athletes. The explosives were reported at Biaka junction, Bunduma and Great Soppo.
At press time that Saturday, it was confirmed that 20 persons were hospitalized at the regional hospital including athletes who were injured in the explosions. Cameroon's minister of sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi visited the victims later in the evening.
Authorities are yet to comment on this latest development.
It was later on reported that a separatist group claimed responsibility over the attacks.
The attack on athletes have been grossly condemned by international organizations, personalities with many calling on the government to initiate immediate ceasefire in the Anglophone regions.
