Bamenda: CSM Skills Young Journalists On Professional Deontologies

About twenty young journalists in Bamenda have upgraded their knowledge on the basics of how to become a professional in the journalism and communication fields.

This was during a one day workshop on April 16, 2022 organized by Community Solutions Media, CSM under the theme "CSM New Breed Journalists Series"

The participants mostly from the department of Communication and Development Studies of the Bamenda university who are already practicing in the domains of print, audiovisual and online blog reporting were drilled on many activities.

Amongst the activities were; Becoming a successful and independent journalist, reporting child abuse, countering fake news and reporting gender based violence during conflicts.

Defining child abuse from the United Nations convention as "any act of violence perpetrated on a child's right below the age of 18 which can be physical, emotional or psychological," Jose Pearl, one of the facilitors told the young journalists to always protect children in their reports.

She added that a good reporter must not put vulnerable people at risk, but he/she should respect the persons dignity, report truth and mind the kind of images they use.

Talking on how to become a successful journalists, Sah Terence Animbom, founder of Community Solutions Media told the participants that a successful and independent journalist must always follow the ethics, have interpersonal skills, be persistent and consistent.

"I called you people new breed journalists because I believe you people have a lot of energy and are the ones to correct mistakes of the past," Sah Terence Animbom said

Facilitating on fact checking, countering fake news and other internet vices, Pedmia Shatu grouped participants into two, where they were able to identify between facts and opinions and how to use them when reporting.

The participants were introduced to various image search sites like Tineye and Google convert, where pictures can be verified.

The one day training workshop ended with the participants being schooled on how to mitigate hate speech in the media, as they move on in the profession.
