AFCON2021: Aboubakar's Brace Put Lions Ahead

Host Cameroon came from behind with two penalties in the space of eight minutes at the end of the first half to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opening game of the Africa Cup of Nations

Captain Vincent Aboubakar scored both penalties, calmly slotting the first to the right side of the goal and the second to the left to complete a comeback that left home fans sighing with relief.

Cameroon had endured a three-year delay to host the tournament after being stripped of the 2019 edition and then seeing their 2021 ambitions delayed a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gustavo Sangare caused his team, Burkina Faso to lead in the 24th minute with an opening goal at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

Sangare scored after Burkina Faso had seen a header cleared off the line and then hit the crossbar in the same move.

But the visitors lost the lead with two reckless pieces of defending at the end of the first half.

Aston Villa's Bertrand Traore barged into Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to give Cameroon their first penalty, which was only confirmed after referee Mustapha Ghorbal of Algeria consulted VAR.

From day one play, Cameroon is toping group A with 3 points 2 goals, second by Cape Verde with 3 points 1 goal.

Mount Cameroon Race: Lady Dies From Explosion Wounds

At least one victim of the Buea explosions, which occurred during the 2023 edition of the Mount Cameroon race of hope is dead. Family sources in Buea have confirmed that Linda Nji died at the Buea regional hospital early Tuesday February 28, 2023. The victim was injured together with her three children in one amongst the three explosions that occurred few minutes into the race on Saturday. "They stood outside watching the race at Bunduma where an explosive went off and injured all of them," a source said. They were later on rushed to the Buea regional hospital, where they have been receiving treatment until Tuesday morning at about 4am when the later died. Report say she died in the presence of her husband and her remains were conveyed to the hospital mortuary, pending burial.
